The techniques and respective levels of accuracy of the mapping products from Magellan are reported including historical altimeter measurements and SAR. The planetary images include 1,650 image strips of 350 by 220,000 pixels which describe a total of 84 percent of the planetary surface. The SAR data from NASA's Magellan Mission are supplemented by an altimeter trace for each orbit and radiometric observations, both of which are taken by the same instrument. The techniques described permit 3D analysis of the surface because terrain elevation is provided, and the results compare favorably with nontraditional methods of assessing surface elevations and slopes. The assumption of symmetry is employed to derive single-image 3D measurements, and some examples of shape reconstruction are presented.
