A radar study of the asteroid 4179 Tautatis was first conducted on December 8 and 9, 1992, when the asteroid was at its minimum distance (3.6 million km) from the earth. Radar measurements of the Doppler shift of the echo signals made it possible to make a significantly more accurate determination of the asteroid orbit. It is found that Tautatis is a binary asteroid; the integral characteristics of its surface, including polarization ratio, radar cross section, and albedo, are determined. The period of the proper rotation of the asteroid is estimated.
