It is noted that incoherent scatter radars at midlatitudes have proved very useful at midlatitudes for the study of the altitude and time variation of ion composition. Here, the radar analysis techniques of ion composition used previously at midlatitudes are adapted and extended to the auroral region. The Chatanika radar makes it possible to take the first long-term measurements of ion composition in the auroral region. The results are found to be consistent with both theory and previous experiments. The largest variations in ion composition are found during periods of large joule heat input resulting from electric fields on the order of 50 mV/m.
