Minor Planets: Radar Observations

Radar observations of main-belt asteroid 654 Zelinda were made at the Arecibo Observatory in February 2002. Echoes were several times stronger than for any previous main-belt radar experiment: delay-Doppler imaging resolution was 1.2 km, one percent of Zelinda's diameter. Zelinda is topographically complex. The most prominent feature is a quasispecular "glint" probably produced by a flat facet 15 km across. This facet may connect in turn to a second feature, perhaps 30 km long and fairly straight. Shape reconstruction is in progress; rotation phase coverage is probably the limiting factor in obtaining a unique model. Any such limitation could be removed at Zelinda's next strong radar apparition in 2009.
