The behavior of the variable star R Aquarii is reviewed and possibilities to account for the star's great variety of phenomena are presented. A long-period or Mira - variable star, a red giant of spectral type M7e, R Aquarii possesses many unusual features, including a changing and complex nebula and a blue continuum. Among other behavior, the star's nebula exhibits outward expansion, development of new features (especially the 'spike'), radial velocity variation in the nebular emission lines by about 100 km per second, and variation in the total hydrogen-line strength and radio-power output over an interval of days. The blue continuum possesses active states that last for several years, and also shows changes in emission-line structure, implying substantial mass ejection. The most reasonable explanation to account for all of these features is that R Aquarii may be the primary star of a binary system, orbited by a white dwarf, although no direct evidence of such a companion has yet been found.
