We present fitting functions to calculate the tidal energy loss in a
stellar encounter. This energy loss is expressed as a function of the
masses, radii and polytropic indices of the two approaching stars, and
of their pericenter distance. The fits are presented for polytropic
indices n = 1.5, 2 and 3.
