Satellite-based measurements of thermal plasma and electric and magnetic fields for the low-altitude cusp are discussed. The intense small-scale magnetic disturbances noted in the winter low-altitude cusp are shown to be magnetically East-West oriented. It is found that the SSMDs have a quasi-periodical structure and probably a compressional component. Analysis of the SSMD polarization structure suggests that in some cases the SSMDs represent compressional surface MHD waves.
