Quasi-periodic variations of the ordinary Es- and E-layer echo amplitudes as a function of frequency have been observed in the ionospheric soundings carried out at the Sodankyla Geophysical Observatory. The variations are explained in terms of interference resulting from mode coupling in steep electron density gradients at the bottomside of the layer. A method is presented by which gradients of the order of 10 to the 10th to 10 to the 11th/cu m-km can be determined from the observed interference patterns.
