Current theories on the nature of quasars are briefly considered, with emphasis on the central black hole idea, broad emission line models, and reddening effects. It is suggested that new data coming from satellites and more sensitive and accurate ground-based observations should eventually lead to knowledge of the physical conditions inside quasars and active nuclei.
