The spectral characteristics of the QSO 3C 48 are described. This object is shown to be related to the IR type of quasars which occupy an intermediate position between ordinary QSOs and FIR galaxies. Arguments are presented supporting the view that 3C 48 could be a powerful source of radiation in lines (including maser lines) of molecular clouds moving in a massive (about 10 to the 10th solar masses) circumnuclear disk. It is shown that the intensity of 3C 48 in maser lines (1667 and 1665 MHz) of the OH molecule can reach 1000 to 10,000 solar luminosities. It is suggested that the detection of these molecular lines from 3C 48 and a number other IR QSOs without a strong 'big bump' in their UV-XR spectra will make it possible to detect objects in which the dense circumnuclear disks are oriented at sharp angles to the line of sight and to intercept a considerable amount of direct radiation from active nuclei.
