Fusion of ground samples of rocks, sediments, and soils with sodium
pyrosulfate removed most of the minerals except quartz and feldspars.
Treatment of the residue with hydrofluosilicic acid (H 2 SiF 6 )
completely removed feldspars. Quartz thus isolated, with O 18 / O 16
ratio unchanged, is suitable for isotopic analysis.
