Some tools to describe the switching process of electrical twinning in various cuts of quartz are proposed. In all cases, the principle of minimal energy, together with a threshold condition is applied to the proper thermodynamic potential to determine which twin will survive the exerted stresses on a quartz sample. An analytical expression useful for samples submitted to a known homogeneous compressive stress is given. For more general stress states, a finite element approach is chosen to study the propagation of the switching process. It is founded upon a bielastic stress-strain relationship introduced into the plasticity model for nonlinear transient analysis in the SYSTUS (trademark) program.
