The paper applies a phenomenological model of quark matter to a possible quark era in the early universe. A quark soup description is suitable for the hadronic era since in this era of the standard cosmological model the density can be so high as to invalidate a description in terms of hadrons. The universe evolves as if it were radiation-dominated, but at densities slightly above the nuclear density a phase transition occurs between phases composed of heavy quarks and light quarks. In addition, the derivation of basic equations in this paper emphasize the necessity of relinquishing the concept of thermal equilibrium in the early universe or redefining it. It is concluded that the quark era is radiation-like due to the smallness of the effective quark mass and the R-dependence of the temperature is not qualitatively essential.
