The vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the stress-energy tensor is determined for a conformal scalar field in the region external to the horizon of a Hartle-Hawking state in Schwarzschild space-time. The VEV expression derived is found to consist of the sum of one term which is identical with the WKB-type VEV approximation of Page (1982) and a small remainder term which is evaluated numerically. The good agreement between the present VEV results and those of Page is shown in graphs, and a correction to the calculation of Fawcett (1983) is suggested.
