It is shown that X-rays from neutron stars with magnetic fields of 10 to the 11th to 10 to the 13th G near cyclotron resonance are highly affected by such quantum effects as electron-positron vacuum polarization, the quantizing character of the magnetic field, the nonharmonic character of the Landau levels, and the quantum recoil of electrons. A detailed analysis of normal-mode absorption coefficients and polarizations for a collisionless rarefied plasma is presented taking the above-mentioned effects into account. It is suggested that these effects should be considered in the interpretation of observational data on X-ray pulsars (e.g., Her X-1) and other X-ray sources associated with neutron stars.
