Universe: Quantum Effects
Scientific paper
The author discusses quantum effects of massless fields in a small topologically non-trivial universe (with a compactification scale less than the horizon) whose expansion is quiescent. It is shown that damping of particle creation takes place and that these universes are stable. Quantum effects are reduced to the Casimir effect and local vacuum polarization, which are obtained from the energy-momentum tensor renormalized via Epstein zeta-function techniques.
