Two-dimensional resistive MHD computations are used to investigate the formation and dynamic evolution of plasmoids. It is shown that a magnetotail equilibrium must include a distant neutral line for a quantitative evaluation of the relevant dynamic properties of plasmoids. Particular attention is given to an acceleration mechanism, which exhibits a universal pattern, but is quantitatively dependent on the details of the initial field structure and on the type of microscopic dissipation.
