In a hierarchical cosmogony present-day galaxies build up by continuous merging of smaller structures. Hydrodynamical simulations were combined with a photoionization code to calculate the metal absorption properties of regions of ongoing galaxy formation. Predictions of the spatial distribution of H I, C II, C IV, Si IV and O VI are presented. The observed column density ratios of the different ionic species can be well reproduced if a mean metallicity [Z/H] = -2.5, relative abundances as found in metal-poor stars and an UV background as proposed by Haardt & Madau are assumed. The observed scatter in [C/H] is about a magnitude larger than that in the simulations suggesting an inhomogeneous metal distribution caused by in situ enrichment.
