The absorption spectra of QSOs are interpreted in terms of cosmological foreground objects. The increase of the number of absorption systems with Z(em) of the QSO can be explained, if protogalaxies of one trillion solar mass and radius of about 70 kpc are believed to be responsible for the absorption. This also gives the observed order of magnitude for column densities of C IV. The high degree of ionization may be maintained by the intergalactic flux of QSO radiation.
