Attention is given to techniques and selection effects for the establishment of uniform samples of absorption line systems, including the basic properties of various absorbers, in the case of QSO absorption. The dual difficulties of redshift determination and ion line identification have led to the automatic computer search method of Bahcall (1968). The classification of absorption line systems, narrow metal line systems, the Lyman-alpha 'forest', Lyman-alpha cloud evolution with epoch or primordiality, high redshift detection of molecular hydrogen clouds, and the correlation between the absorption line spectra of close QSO pairs, are discussed.
