Spectroscopic observations of the optically selected quasar Q 0002-422 are examined which were obtained with the image dissector scanner at the Cassegrain spectrograph of the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian telescope. The Ly-alpha and C IV 1549-A lines yield a mean emission redshift of 2.77, and two prominent absorption-line systems are observed at the respective absorption redshifts of 0.8354 and 2.2996. The absorption systems and emission spectra of Q 0002-422 and Q 0453-423 are compared, and the absorption-line system at the smaller redshift in Q 0002-422 is shown to be at a velocity of 0.62c with respect to the emission-line system. The Fe II and Mg II equivalent widths in the same absorption-line system in Q 0002-422 are found to imply a velocity dispersion of the order of 200 km/s.
