Cosmology benefits today from the existence of a well-founded cosmological model able to account for very diverse astrophysical observations. This happy situation is a recent development in the field. Besides reflecting our best understanding of the cosmos and its evolution, the model serves the important role of guide to ongoing and future research by providing a framework for formulating important questions. In this set of lectures we will review the theoretical and observational foundations of the standard cosmological model. Our aim will be to understand its construction and limitations, and to use it to identify central issues that are becoming the focus of intense research efforts worldwide.
