Mirrors: Stability
Scientific paper
The size of mirrors for ground-based astronomical telescopes is constantly increasing to permit them to capture a growing amount of information from even more distant regions of the universe. With the increasing diameter of the mirrors, however, their weight is causing genuine problems. In instruments operated in space, every ounce of weight saved is important, but the stability of the mirrors must not be endangered in the process.
