The old and most metal-poor stars in the halo and thick disk of the Galaxy may provide vital clues for unraveling the formation and structure of the Milky Way, and astrophysical times and sites for chemical element production. We have recently initiated a long-term PUMPSS (Purdue Ultra Metal-Poor Star Survey) program to discover very metal-poor (VMP) stars newly and analyze their chemo-dynamical properties. We continue to propose to carry out medium-resolution spectroscopy for new 500 candidates of field VMP red-giant stars with [Fe/H] ≤ -2.0 in the halo and thick disk. These new VMP red- giant candidates (N ~ 1400) have been systematically selected by utilizing the mature photometric data archives of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and some 540 candidates have been thus far observed in the detection rate of over 30 %. We continue to seek to use KPNO 2.1m and SOAR 4.2m telescopes to spectroscopically verify their metallicity and luminosity class. This PUMPSS program will significantly increase the number of identified VMP stars over a range of depths and sky coverage (including the regions not covered by ongoing surveys for VMP stars), and so provide the astronomy community with a number of relatively bright (13 < B < 15.5) VMP red- giant stars useful for high-dispersion abundance analysis with the currently available 6-10m class telescopes (before the advent of 25-30m class telescopes).
