The magnetic poles of a neutron star are expected to be hotter than the remainder of its surface. The observed X-ray intensity of blackbody radiation will then be modulated as rotation carries each hot spot across the visible disk of the star. Two models for the distribution of temperature over the stellar surface are presented, and the predicted 'light' curves and spectra synthesized. The X-ray emissions from two radio pulsars are interpreted as examples of this effect. Both the light curve and flux from PSR 1509-58 are well described by a model in which the polar caps are strongly heated by the magnetosphere. The light curve of PSR 1055-52, if blackbody in origin, implies that it is nearly aligned, a conclusion of particular interest in that this source shows interpulses.
