The mode of operation of the pulsed inductive thruster (PIT) is described, and the results of tests with earlier designs, the design approach of the Mark V thruster, experimental techniques, and recent test results are presented. The PIT utilizes a one-meter-diameter, flat spiral coil energized impulsively from a capacitor bank. The PIT is proposed for megawatt class nuclear-electric cargo vehicles able to support Mars and lunar exploration and base development activities.
