The pulse-to-pulse mean intensity modulation was analyzed for 36 radio pulsars at various frequencies. The modulation index decreases in general proportional to the -0.4 power of the frequency up to a critical frequency of approximately 1 GHz and was found to increase again from there on proportional to the 0.6 power of the frequency where high frequency data were available. The critical frequency coincides with the critical frequencies in the flux density spectrum and/or in the component width-frequency diagram. The critical frequency may be the frequency at which the coherent amplification mechanism breaks down.
