A pulsational mode typing analysis of line profiles of the Si III 4567-A line in the Beta Cephei star 12 Lacertae is presented. Line profiles derived from high-dispersion observations taken on eight separate nights were fit by the selection of appropriate macroturbulence rotation and pulsation amplitudes corresponding to four modes. It is found that the observed variations in line shape can be fit only by one l = 0 (radial pulsation) mode and the l = 2, m = 0, -1 and -2 nonradial modes, with the three nonradial modes close and equally spaced in frequency. Results confirm the conclusion of Jerzykiewicz (1978) that 12 Lac is viewed from a low inclination (approximately 15 deg). Theoretical reasons for expecting the resonance coupling of radial and nonradial modes are considered to apply to 12 Lac and thus support the postulate that all Beta Cepheids are primarily radial oscillators. The results also suggest that nonradial modes in B stars are normally delicate, short-lived oscillations restricted to the very outer envelopes.
