A pulsating aurora is a natural example of the loss of particles from confinement in a magnetic mirror. The precipitating electron beam is studied for the purpose of deducing the events that occur in the last few seconds before the particles strike the atmosphere. The pitch-angle diffusion theory of Coroniti and Kennel (1970) is examined and found to be fairly successful, but some areas of the theory which require attention are identified. These areas involve the effect of the cold plasma density, the existence of similar pulsations in the proton fluxes, the apparent temperature variation of the precipitating electrons, and the nature of some morphological features. Topics discussed include the large and small scale morphology, measurement techniques for the precipitating particles, and the question of whether auroral pulsations are caused by modulated electron fluxes.
