The current status of knowledge on pulsars is surveyed, with an emphasis on recent observations and theoretical models. The first discovery of a pulsar (PSR 1919 + 21) in November 1967 is recalled; the characteristics of the over 400 pulsars discovered since then are summarized; the generally accepted neutron-star model of pulsars is explained and illustrated with a diagram; and the models proposed to account for the generation of well-beamed radio waves are discussed. Also considered are: (1) the use of pulsars in observational tests of the theory of general relativity, (2) pulsar observations as probes of interstellar gas, and (3) the possibility that a young pulsar may appear in SN 1987A.
