Six pulsars are shown to exhibit subpulse drifting; this phenomenon has heretofore been generally accepted for only one case (PSR 1919 + 21). The method employed leads to the tentative conclusion, favored by theory, that organized subpulse drifting is the 'normal' behavior rather than the exception. The sample was selected on the basis of the requirement that the drift would stretch across the entire window corresponding, in the hollow-cone version of the polar-cap sparking model, to a nearly tangential cut. It is shown that random time variations in the intensity, overlapping of the emission regions on the neutron star, and variability of the drift rate or spark precession speed are quite normal features of pulsar emission which complicate the recognition of organized subpulse drifting. Azimuthal variations in the intensity occur that point to a significant control of the emission mechanism by surface features on the neutron star.
