The design and operation of the Italian Northern Cross radio telescope are described, and preliminary results from observations of pulsars are reported. The telescope comprises a 635-m-long N-S arm of 64 24-m-long parabolic cylindrical antennas with effective gain 1 K/Jy and system noise temperature 400 K and a 572-m-long E-W arm of 1536 dipoles connected in a 'X-mas-tree' configuration to form six antenna sections with six independent RF and IF channels; the gain of the E-W arm is 2 K/Jy, and efforts are underway to reduce the system noise temperature of 430 K to about 140 K by the use of 12 GaAs FET preamplifiers. Current operation is at 408 MHz with bandwidth about 2.8 MHz. The computer-controlled pulsar observing system is characterized and illustrated with diagrams, and pulsar profiles obtained with the E-W arm are presented graphically.
