The relationship between period (P) and magnetogyro ratio (gamma) is examined for a sample of 293 pulsars from the catalog of Manchester and Taylor (1981), and an evolutionary scheme based on the thermally driven Hall limited-field battery effect (Woodward; 1978, 1982) is proposed for pulsars with P less than about 500 msec. A P/gamma diagram is shown, and the independence of gamma (at about 1.6 x 10 to the -8th) from P in these the short-period pulsars is demonstrated. Only neutron-star models based on stiff equations of state are found to give plausible results in this scheme.
