Pulsars can be classified according to a function of period and period derivative into those whose integrated pulse widths indicate that they are undergoing magnetic alignment with a time constant of about 10 to the 6th yr, and those for which no significant evidence of such alignment exists. The lack of evidence for alignment in certain pulsars may be explained by a time constant not less than 10 to the 7th yr, or possibly for pulse emission from regions near the light cylinder rather than the polar caps of the neutron star.
