In the stereographic projection treated by Ptolemy in the Planisphaerium the celestial sphere is mapped onto the plane of the equator by projection from the south pole. Ptolemy does not prove the important property that circles on the sphere become circles on the plane. In this paper, a proof is brought to light from a note on the Planisphaerium text by Maslama al-Majrītī (late 10th century), a proof that may be older than that of al-Farghānī.
