This thesis investigates several problems in which concepts developed in particle physics are applied in an astrophysical context. Following a brief introduction, the second chapter involves the generation of galactic magnetic fields. A method for generating these fields in the early universe through the coupling of the magnetic field to pseudoscalars is investigated. The possibility that interesting phenomena, with respect to baryogenesis, could occur at the electroweak phase transition within the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model is examined in the third chapter. The fourth chapter deals with the generation of an astrophysically interesting cosmological constant using ideas from particle physics. Finally, the fifth chapter reexamines previous work on the observational consequences of the conversion of photons to pseudoscalars in the presence of a magnetic field within our galaxy.
