In the minimum phase between cycles, on 19 Jan. 1985, a new spot group started and developed very quickly. On 21 Jan, 23 52 UT, a proton flare with position S 8 deg, W 38 deg occurred. This flare was connected and followed by some terrestrial effects. The proton flare commenced after the preceding sheer trend of flare activity, when the magnetic type of sunspot group reached class delta and both polarities of spots were compensated in their intensities. This event confirms and increases the number of earlier established features of active regions with proton flares, which play an important role in predictions. Digital image processing has been developed to improve the quality of the faint aurora.
