Previous lidar observations of the moon are examined in order to estimate the expected accuracy in determining certain astronomical and geodetic parameters from such observations. Relevant covariance (inverse) matrices of the normal equations used in data reduction are analyzed for several experiments which differed in the number of laser corner-angle reflections made as well as in the duration and intensity of measurements of the distance between the earth and moon. It is concluded that highly accurate lunar ephemerides can be expected to be determined by lidar observations.
