Automatic stations will play the main role in the Russian program of planetary research. Among these, the outstanding place is occupied by vehicles intended for surface investigations using contact methods. Such investigations may be performed as under stationary conditions and also by use of planetary mobile vehicles. Stationary stations can not provide research of macroevents over spacious terrains and can not gather the statistics necessary for comparative analyses of various geological and climatic zones, etc. All these tasks can be solved by use of planetary mobile vehicles: planetary rovers. The history of Soviet rovers is outlined. Planetary mobile vehicles in the program of Mars investigations are discussed looking into their problems and utilization (global mapping, soil sample gathering and investigation, search for landing site, and regions for investigation). Focus is on the Mars Rover and on a micro-Mars rover. The use of the Mars rover in the Mars sample return mission is considered. Planetary rover development trends (electronics, power support, chassis modifications) are outlined. Diagrams are included.
