A hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray detector is presented with a discussion regarding current development and potential uses of the detector. Also called the high pressure xenon gas scintillation imaging drift chamber, the device is based on a combination of gas scintillation and the time projection concept. The detector provides high pressure, a large effective area, and a capacity for background rejection that make the device highly sensitive. The interaction time can be measured by the scintillation device, and pointlike interactions can be precisely located in all three dimensions. Results of testing for primary scintillation, FWHM energy resolution, and spatial resolution are given for a prototype of the gas scintillation drift chamber. The detector is demonstrated to offer good spatial and energy resolution, good time resolution, good background rejection capabilities leading to high sensitivity, and extrapolation to large-area detectors.
