Lindblad Resonances

Scientific paper

Johnson B-band and Cousins I-band photometry, and Hα Fabry-Perot kinematics are presented for 27 Sb-Sc galaxies. This data set is explored through integrated properties, surface brightness profiles, rotation curves, images, color index maps, velocity fields, and velocity residual maps. Canzian's method of locating the radius of the corotation resonance is applied to all 27 galaxies. Radii of this resonance are found for seven of those galaxies, and are compared to visual features in blue light. Contrary to the findings for early-type galaxies, the rings in these seven galaxies do not seem to be associated with the inner ultraharmonic resonance, but rather with the corotation resonance. Furthermore, the outer Lindblad resonances are found to lie at intermediate disk radii rather than at the outermost radii of the spiral patterns. Integrated properties of galaxies throughout the Revised Hubble Sequence are presented in a statistical analysis of galaxies in the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies.
