The properties of accelerated ions and electrons that interact in the solar atmosphere and photosphere can be revealed through measurements of the resulting hard X-ray and gamma-ray emissions. These properties provide information on the acceleration processes and particle transport. We discuss the remarkable 2005 January 20 flare observed by RHESSI and Coronas that exhibited several episodes of particle acceleration and interaction. We relate these observations to measurements of the associated Solar Energetic Particle event and Ground Level Event. We also summarize accelerated- particle composition studies made by the SMM spectrometer and observations by the Fermi satellite of the first gamma-ray flare of Cycle 24. This work was supported by NASA grant NNX07A074G.
