Four pairs of plates taken with the 40 cm astrograph of Shanghai Observatory were used to determine the proper motions of 2284 stars of the open cluster NGC 2286 and their errors. An error analysis shows that the mean error per unit weight in the centennial proper motion is + or - 0.366 in. A detailed study of membership shows that the membership is highly uncertain; one possible interpretation is that the cluster may not in fact exist, or at least the available proper motion data do not yet provide an effective criterion for membership.
