The propagation of ionizing MHD shock waves in a medium with magnetic field and density gradients is studied for two particular cases: (1) when density remains constant and the magnetic field increases along the propagation direction of the front, and (2) when the magnetic field remains constant and density decreases along the propagation direction of the front. Theoretical and experimental investigations show that the magnetic field is forced out into the region in front of the shock wave for both cases. It is shown that acceleration of the ionizing shock front is significantly less than in the case of an ideal plasma, but greater than in the purely hydrodynamic case.
