Three striae are identified for the dust tail of comet West 1975, which were observed (over a period of 4 days in March 1976) to propagate in space while retaining their basic form. The dynamic behavior of the striae were studied by superimposition of photographic images on the Becvar Sky Atlas. Values of a point-to-point correspondence between the four positions of each stria are given. Total acceleration was found to be 0.34 m/sec/sec, which is contrasted with a gravitational acceleration of 0.154 m/sec/sec at perihelion. It is noted that an accurate determination of the chemical composition (possibly iron, magnetite, or graphite) is critical to an understanding of the striae dynamics.
