Simultaneous observations of electromagnetic fields, precipitating particles, plasma and neutral gas parameters are critical for identifying possible energy sources and thus for understanding the thermospheric response due to Ionosphere-Thermosphere coupling. We report on a prompt thermospheric response to commencement of the November 6, 2001 magnetic storm. Neutral density data from the CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) satellite accelerometer are compared fields, particles and plasma data from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites. In addition, the Polar UVI images and electron energy fluxes from the NOAA-14 satellite are used. The satellite drag data show that the neutral density in the northern (winter) hemisphere responded to the substorm-caused geomagnetic activity within 5 minutes. The CHAMP transit time from the northern to southern hemisphere after the onset was about 30 min. Therefore, we can conclude that strong disturbances in the high- to mid-latitude southern thermosphere at altitudes of about 400 km have already been established within this time.
