Promoting Inquiry Through Science Eduction: A Partnership With the Navajo Nation
Promoting Inquiry Through Science Education (PRISE) is a partnership between the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the University of Arizona and the Pinon Unified School District. This unique program teams scientists with master teachers to deliver high quality professional development to K-8 science teachers on the Navajo and Hopi Nations.
We are presenting a series of six professional development workshops from August of 2007 through January of 2008. The workshops are based on the Lawrence Hall of Science GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) guides. We are also presenting sessions on other topics that are heavily covered in the science standards to supplement the GEMS guides. The workshops are being presented by a unique combination of professional scientists and master teachers ensuring a combination of science content knowledge and educational pedagogy is presented in each workshop.
Between workshops the teachers engage in online discussions using the University of Arizona's D2L (Desire to Learn) distance learning web site. Teachers have access to all course materials and be able to post questions between workshops.
We will discuss the structure of the workshops as well as the challenges we faced working with a culturally diverse group of teachers in a remote location.
PRISE is funded by a grant from the Arizona Department of Education.
