A scenario for prominence formation and eruption with an associated coronal transient and two-ribbon flare is suggested. The same magnetic field configuration is used for all three events: a figure 8 with an elevated neutral line low in the corona upon which the prominence rests. A plausible mechanism for eruption is argued to be a constriction of the structure near the base due to forces exerted by the external magnetic field. This mechanism can provide the upward force needed to drive the transient, and is consistent with the hot rising X-ray flare loops seen in the corona during flares. Considering two limiting cases, pressure dominated and magnetically dominated structures, the dynamical response as a result of lateral constriction is calculated and the results compared with observation.
