Determining the processes by which Lyman Alpha (Lya) escapes from galaxies at low redshift is an important step towards understanding Lya observations at high redshift. Studies of star-forming galaxies at high redshift increasingly rely upon Lya as a diagnostic of star formation efficiency without a firm understanding of how the properties of the galaxy might be affecting the Lya escape fraction. Quantifying the escape fraction requires measurements of both Lya and the Balmer line series in nearby star-forming galaxies for comparison of the observed ratios to the intrinsic value given by recombination theory. Project Balmer is a collaborative effort to acquire ancillary groundbased, spectro-photometric optical emission line and continuum maps to support a completed Hubble Space Telescope cycle 16 program to search for Lya leak in 14 northern hemisphere galaxies in the redshift range, 0.02 < z < 0.04, using the Advanced Camera for Surveys Solar Blind Channel (ACS/SBC). The goal of Project Balmer is determine the extinction correction and degree of [NII] contamination for narrow band H-alpha imaging of the targets conducted at the Nordic Optical Telescope. To date we have mapped more then 50% of the Project Balmer target galaxies using the DIS instrument at the Apache Point Observatory. Our sample covers a wide range of morphologies; from extended face-on disks to potentially merging pairs. We present all line maps completed to date and utilize numerous established optical spectral diagnostics to investigate the spatial variation of metalicity, extinction and star formation rate.
