New tenure-track faculty should be mindful of issues that affect how their tenure applications will be viewed by a committee of faculty from outside their department. While it is common knowledge that one must do excellent teaching and research to get tenure, this is a rather vague set of guiding principles. Along the way, faculty face specific choices about which research projects to focus on and which courses to teach. Understanding the types of questions that arise in the tenure evaluation process (e.g. about the range of courses taught or the independence of the research) can give new faculty valuable perspective on the implications of their decisions. This presentation will draw on the speaker's experience as a faculty mentor and a member of a college tenure & promotion committee.
